Tick Tock Tick Tock, Change the genre, rhyme, time and sounds… In my days before the pandemic life I spent my time traveling. What else is there? Sitting around the sprawling house talking to the cat? But after the pandemic, in the interim, while I’m off the road, I’ve been press ganged into a role as a music reviewer for OL and while I have listened to music forever, been moved by music forever, when confronted by endless demos, pre-releases, press releases, youtube mood videos, embargoed content like anyone cares and so on and precious so on… I’ve realised, more than anything else, a lot of music sounds tired and played out... This poem kinda captures my current sense of ennui and ambivalence that has replaced a lifelong sense of wonder, in music...
TICK YOCK TICK TOCK THE METRONOMIC ROCK
Tick Tock – Tock Tock
metronomic rock
Tap, two, tap four, tap two, tap four,
Make the rhyme, simple score,
Timpani tap, bass drums slap.
There’s guitar, a discordant slash,
Absent cymbal splash,
Samples range, shouting their roots,
The words here matter, passions pour,
60’s Folk,
Post punk rap.
Old sounds, now made new,
Kinda Blue, Bitches Brew.
Jazz and soul, plunder blues,
Rapping on ‘bout paying dues.
Covers, tributes, samples reign,
Too few rhymes,
Too many sounds,
Passion’s words now Confounds,
Rap’s a soundtrack
for many lives,
In music history,
It will thrive,
Wrapped with Folk,
The words rule now,
In all these worlds
Sounds’ melded mix
Hi-Life, Gnawa,
All play new licks,
Voices changed,
Sounds rearranged,
In Radio Garden,
Not preordained,
The Worlds music,
Enchanting sounds.
