The brilliant series of Cafe Royal mini-books continues with their release of Simon Pope’s City Kids London.
How is it that an individual photograph tells a bigger story than five minutes of filmed footage? I don’t know, but immerse yourselves in these moments in the lives of London kids from the 1970s and wonder at the synesthesiac pleasures of smelling the sweaty wildness of two lads perched on the boot of a car on a hot summer’s day, hearing the above-the-traffic yells and screams of the boy (?) in the barrel being rolled along a street and experience the visceral fear of the boy grinning whilst cuddling a guard dog.
In those days, kids got out and about in ways that would freak today’s mums and dads.
We knew you could rub dirt and spit into a cut to stop the bleeding and that garage roofs were for climbing.
If you struggle to explain the olden days to your grandkids, buy these books.
If you wonder if what your dad told you was actually true about his childhood, buy these books.
