Kirk Lake's poem, Morphology, is taken from his early 90s spoken word LP Pictorial Memo. As your Sunday morphs into Monday, you have taken another step on your personal extinction path...

Morphology first appeared to my knowledge on Kirk Lake's early 90s spoken word LP for Dreamy Records, Pictorial Memo. Sonic sounds aside that you will not hear here, I was always taken by the lines about our first steps on extinction's path... Lake' subsequent work includes critically acclaimed novels and screenplays, and many wonderful interventions about movies, particularly short films, for Outsideleft.

MORPHOLOGY

Lights explode
In his eye
Exotic Birds
Caught in flight

The moon assured
Behind the bedroom door
And you’ll never see him cry

First fish with lungs
First lizard with wings
Evolution sets you on
Extinctions path
First fish with lungs
First lizard with wings
Going one step forward
And five steps back

Mouth is dry
Lips are cracked
A glass of water
Is ocean wide

He raised his hand
The water splashed
His greasy pores drown in brine

First fish with lungs
First lizard with wings
Evolution sets you on
Extinctions path
First fish with lungs
First lizard with wings
Going one step forward
And five steps back

Strange to know
Afraid to ask
The blood drips red
but it dries black

The ceiling cracks
And the faith he lacks…
Watch it drift away like holy smoke

First fish with lungs
First lizard with wings
Evolution sets you on
Extinctions path
First fish with lungs
First lizard with wings
Going one step forward
And five steps back

HELP OUTSIDELEFT

Outsideleft exists on a precarious no budget budget. We are interested in hearing from deep and deeper pocket types willing to underwrite our cultural vulture activity. We're not so interested in plastering your product all over our stories, but something more subtle and dignified for all parties concerned. Contact us and let's talk. [HELP OUTSIDELEFT]

WRITE FOR OUTSIDELEFT

If Outsideleft had arms they would always be wide open and welcoming to new writers and new ideas. If you've got something to say, something a small dank corner of the world needs to know about, a poem to publish, a book review, a short story, if you love music or the arts or anything else, write something about it and send it along. Of course we don't have anything as conformist as a budget here. But we'd love to see what you can do. Write for Outsideleft, do. [SUBMISSIONS FORM HERE]
