THE LOVELY EGGS
Eggsistentialism
(Egg Records)
The Lovely Eggs are one of those bands I’ve happily forced into unsuspecting ears and not needed to rethink my opinions on those people. It is for me, a heartbreaking reality that nowhere near enough people know who they are - but genuinely enjoy what they hear then fail spectacularly to seek them out on their own time.
A week ago, a colleague asked me what music I would play at a Dinner party, which was one of the harder questions I’ve faced for a while - I responded that I’d have to play music that I thought people SHOULD hear, rather than trying to stomach something inoffensive with mass appeal - because nobody would want a quietly seething host gritting their teeth through Elbow or worse, Coldplay. This was followed up with “what have you been listening to lately?” - it was nothing short of a delight to respond that I couldn’t tell them till next week and saunter off to unstack the chairs that I all too frequently bruise my shins on. You see, I’ve been listening to Eggsistentialism for a few weeks and I’m nothing short of f*cking delighted by it.
Eggsistentialism is going to be a high contender for my most listened to Albums this year, a sound so full it’s long since come undone at the seams, leaving a sprawl of yellow and orange spiralling within and around it. With production from Dave Fridmann that serves more as highlighter than a filter leaving a simultaneously raw and polished album, which is a cohesive work of dare I say it, Art.
I’m refraining from picking out the ‘must hear’ tracks, and ask you to trust me on this - it’s a must hear album.
Go forth and listen.
