The Breeders should need no introduction. Founded by former Pixies bassist Kim Deal, the band is now 31 years on from the release of their platinum selling second album Last Splash, 11 years on from a 20th anniversary extended edition and a year on from an "original analogue" reissue with extra tracks.

Now with no new product to promote and having just embarked on a 26 date tour of Europe and the US, The Breeders have released a video of themselves performing four tracks from that seminal album, in a semi acoustic set recorded in the Big Sur redwood forest in north California.

Ostensibly an ad hoc jam, brought about by the cancellation of a nearby gig, the sound quality and multi camera set up suggest it may not have been quite as impromptu as claimed.

But what the hell. What we get is four musicians the wrong side of sixty (plus an unnamed violinist), sans studio and stage trickery, plugging away at four songs they've been playing live for well over 30 years and clearly enjoying every moment. The guitars are acoustic - as is the violin, and the drum kit reduced to a single snare and a selection of upturned flower pots. The stripped down sound more than complements the four songs from Last Splash - ‘Do You Love Me Now’ ‘Divine Hammer’, ‘Invisible Man’, and a stunning raw, but tender take on ‘Drivin’ on 9’.

Did I say "The wrong side of sixty" ? My bad, if anything The Breeders are improving with age, and a new found low fi, modus vivendi.

Check it out for yourself - the result is simply delightful.

HELP OUTSIDELEFT

Outsideleft exists on a precarious no budget budget. We are interested in hearing from deep and deeper pocket types willing to underwrite our cultural vulture activity. We're not so interested in plastering your product all over our stories, but something more subtle and dignified for all parties concerned. Contact us and let's talk. [HELP OUTSIDELEFT]

WRITE FOR OUTSIDELEFT

If Outsideleft had arms they would always be wide open and welcoming to new writers and new ideas. If you've got something to say, something a small dank corner of the world needs to know about, a poem to publish, a book review, a short story, if you love music or the arts or anything else, write something about it and send it along. Of course we don't have anything as conformist as a budget here. But we'd love to see what you can do. Write for Outsideleft, do. [SUBMISSIONS FORM HERE]
