one of the stand out tracks from Poptical Illusion

John Cale has released a new video, to accompany the announcement of his UK and European tour scheduled for next March. The track, "Davies and Wales", is the third from the album Poptical Illusion, released earlier this summer, to be celebrated in vision. A gentle nostalgic number, the song sees Cale - whose middle name is Davies - reflecting on aging, and a career that has taken him from a mining village in South Wales to New York and fame with the Velvet Underground, and latterly California. The video, directed by Emmy-nominated Jethro Waters, manages to reference all three. Vintage B&W and early colour super 8 film clips of summer beach and pool scenes provide a nostalgic back drop between clips of Cale at work in his studio. In between and over both, flash bright primary colours in keeping with Andy Warhol and VU's Exploding Plastic Inevitable light show. The effect is simultaneously melancholic and uplifting - a difficult trick to pull off, and the perfect visual accompaniment to one of the stand out tracks from Poptical Illusion.

HELP OUTSIDELEFT

Outsideleft exists on a precarious no budget budget. We are interested in hearing from deep and deeper pocket types willing to underwrite our cultural vulture activity. We're not so interested in plastering your product all over our stories, but something more subtle and dignified for all parties concerned. Contact us and let's talk. [HELP OUTSIDELEFT]

WRITE FOR OUTSIDELEFT

If Outsideleft had arms they would always be wide open and welcoming to new writers and new ideas. If you've got something to say, something a small dank corner of the world needs to know about, a poem to publish, a book review, a short story, if you love music or the arts or anything else, write something about it and send it along. Of course we don't have anything as conformist as a budget here. But we'd love to see what you can do. Write for Outsideleft, do. [SUBMISSIONS FORM HERE]
