OL writer John Robinson has interviewed Mr Keith about his self-released album Perfumed Ponces! That interview will is here. As a companion piece Keith was also kind enough to provide thoughts on each track.
1. Over And Overture
I always liked the idea of having an instrumental introduction to the album. This is a version of Perfumed Ponces that seems to tie in nicely with the lyrics and why I called it Over And Overture.
2. Concrete Jungle
This was possibly the first song I wrote as Drunk Keith! Due to recent circumstances it feels incredibly relevant lyrically unfortunately. I’m like Mark E Smith with my precognitive abilities. It’s also lyrically influenced by The Smiths.
3. My Life As A Dog
This is in part a social commentary on some of the worst masculine traits I’ve witnessed on the streets and hopefully an acknowledgment of female superiority. It’s my girlfriend’s favourite track on the album. I love the way in which it subverts the listeners expectation and becomes an endorsement of feminist politics undermining the apparently initial misogynistic themes. It’s my attempt at being Serge Gainsborough, in hindsight it would have been lovely as a duet with Laetitia Sadier!
4. You’re Going Home In A Fucking Ambulance
Again, this is a freewheeling thought-experiment that amplifies the lyrical narrative by juxtaposing it with a rather sweet musicality. An incursion into J G Ballard territory.
5. Canine Luv Affairs
Once again returning to the Ricky Lake stereotype of men as dogs, it’s a companion piece to My Life As A Dog.
6. You're Going Home In A Fucking Ambience
This is a mediative comedown track, a soporific bubble bath for the mind to fully immerse itself in. It also enabled me to use a great title and remix Ambulance.
7. Perfumed Ponces
This is a song for the geeks, freaks and socially awkward. I’m very proud of this song as lyrically it’s an authentic piece of autobiography that is hopefully emotionally resonant and truthful.
