Sophie Carabott
Saturday 31st May 2pm to 8pm
St Margaret’s Church Hall,
Highland Road, Southsea.
31st May sees both the opening and closing of Southsea artist Sophie Carabott’s debut one woman show of paintings and collages inspired by her love of punk and heavily influenced by her admiration for Andy Warhol and Jamie Reid. It all takes place in a room festooned with handmade banners and painted sheets scrawled with handmade designs. “If you think art needs to be transcendent or high-concept, this is probably not for you” says Sophie, adding “If you’re wondering what to expect, try imagining Andy Warhol and Jamie Reid pogoing to The Slits.” Confrontational and mischievous, familiar Jamie Reid designs such as the Never Mind The Bollocks sleeve are merged with screen printed images of Sophie herself. An Art Artful Dodger, Sophie subverts and celebrates in equal measure.
From 2pm until 5pm you can enjoy a playlist full of punk, trash, glam, reggae, from King Tubby, Jonathan Richman and The Raincoats, to The Kinks, and The Headcoatees! Then, from 5pm onwards, you can enjoy a punk DJ set from Matt Loten. You should probably bring your own beer and crisps for that as the exhibition is completely free to enter. Yes, free. Gratis. It won't cost you a penny. There will be tea and home made cakes on offer though.
Then, like a punk Mayfly, it will all be gone, existing in one perfect day and no more. Your loss if you miss it.
